Unmasking the Greedy Tycoons: How Power and Profit Are Threatening India's Future

Two Gujaratis—who lay claim to their occupancy of the best assets the country has and for whom the governance of our democratic country is keenly motivated to support. This slogan is now echoing from the streets of Delhi to the lips of every citizen. The two prominent figures mentioned here are the two major tycoons of the country—at whose slightest gesture the laws of the country are changed; at whose whim the country's 'Prime Minister' does not hesitate for a moment to give them the vast Aravalli hills of Rajasthan under their control; and for whose commercial gains the country's mines, airports, seaports, power grids, and even the stocks and funds of insurance giants like Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC of India) are being gambled away, and who are trying to demolish the largest communication system, BSNL, for their survival.

Massive Crowds at Petrol Pumps in Odisha, Despite Government Claims of Adequate Stock
Manoranjan Pattanaik | Bhubaneswar
15th May, 2026
In Odisha, the recent hike in petrol and diesel prices has sparked widespread discontent among citizens. Despite claims by departmental ministers and secretaries that there is no shortage of petrol and diesel in the state and that stocks are adequate, motorists remain unconvinced. Driven by fears of an impending cyclone; much like the desperate rush to hoard potatoes, they are queuing up at petrol pumps in large numbers. It remains unclear whether this shortage of petrol and diesel in the state is genuine or artificial. However, doctored images and video clips of petrol pumps circulating rapidly on social media have further exacerbated public anxiety.
Today in Bhubaneswar, the price of petrol stands at ₹104.19, an increase from yesterday's price of ₹100.97. Yesterday, the price of diesel was hiked from ₹92.55 to ₹95.74. For the past ten days, petrol prices had remained steady at ₹100.97, and diesel prices at ₹92.55. Despite assurances of adequate supply from the Odisha government, similar trends are being observed in other districts of Odisha, including the capital city. The combined impact of this economic strain and the government's apparent lack of control over those artificially creating a fuel shortage is fueling public frustration and eroding trust in the administrative machinery.
At this critical juncture, the government appears to show little interest in taking the necessary steps to dispel public fears regarding a fuel shortage. Critics suggest that this situation serves as a false signal—perhaps a precursor to a major reshuffle expected within the BJP government in the coming days. While, on one hand, it is being asserted that fuel stocks are sufficient, the reality on the ground at petrol pumps tells a completely different story. Citizens are facing severe hardships due to rising prices, which is impacting their daily lives and commute. This disconnect between government statements and public sentiment is fueling protests and unrest across Odisha, as common people demand transparency and relief from this persistent rise in prices.

Media Bias and Neglect: The Root Cause of National Crisis and Disillusionment
Manoranjan Pattanaik | Bhubaneswar
2nd May, 2026
I am deeply distressed by the fact that the root cause of the nation's current plight lies with certain media houses—entities that have now come to be labeled as the country's 'mainstream media.' Rather than challenging the sharp voices of critics, these media houses have become entirely preoccupied with singing their own praises and acting as though they have deliberately thrown chili powder into the eyes and ears of the citizenry.
This 'biased' media conglomerate—which seeks to establish itself as a highly influential entity by wielding the government's 'stick'—is directly responsible for leaving the nation's youth unemployed and despondent. The country's investor class is disillusioned by the government's constantly shifting rules and regulations. From toothbrushes to towels, from vegetables to groceries, and from petroleum products to fuel—the skyrocketing prices of every commodity are breaking the back of the nation's middle class.
The country's education and healthcare systems have completely collapsed; they constitute systems where quality is in perpetual decline, and the entire populace is still compelled to pay a heavy price. In light of your own profound sentiments regarding this matter, my observations may seem trivial. However, your prolonged silence and lax attitude toward this issue stand as some of the primary reasons behind the nation's current state of misery.
It has now become absolutely imperative to rectify this grave situation, for the time has come when we must confront these problems head-on. Such a predicament compels us to voice our outrage regarding the duties of the nation's 'Fourth Pillar' (the media) and its patrons. This situation is simultaneously shaking my conscience and confronting me with a multitude of agonizing questions.
