Massive Crowds at Petrol Pumps in Odisha, Despite Government Claims of Adequate Stock
In Odisha, the recent hike in petrol and diesel prices has sparked widespread discontent among citizens. Despite claims by departmental ministers and secretaries that there is no shortage of petrol and diesel in the state and that stocks are adequate, motorists remain unconvinced. Driven by fears of an impending cyclone; much like the desperate rush to hoard potatoes, they are queuing up at petrol pumps in large numbers. It remains unclear whether this shortage of petrol and diesel in the state is genuine or artificial. However, doctored images and video clips of petrol pumps circulating rapidly on social media have further exacerbated public anxiety.
Today in Bhubaneswar, the price of petrol stands at ₹104.19, an increase from yesterday's price of ₹100.97. Yesterday, the price of diesel was hiked from ₹92.55 to ₹95.74. For the past ten days, petrol prices had remained steady at ₹100.97, and diesel prices at ₹92.55. Despite assurances of adequate supply from the Odisha government, similar trends are being observed in other districts of Odisha, including the capital city. The combined impact of this economic strain and the government's apparent lack of control over those artificially creating a fuel shortage is fueling public frustration and eroding trust in the administrative machinery.
At this critical juncture, the government appears to show little interest in taking the necessary steps to dispel public fears regarding a fuel shortage. Critics suggest that this situation serves as a false signal—perhaps a precursor to a major reshuffle expected within the BJP government in the coming days. While, on one hand, it is being asserted that fuel stocks are sufficient, the reality on the ground at petrol pumps tells a completely different story. Citizens are facing severe hardships due to rising prices, which is impacting their daily lives and commute. This disconnect between government statements and public sentiment is fueling protests and unrest across Odisha, as common people demand transparency and relief from this persistent rise in prices.
