Behind a nearly 600 billion cosmetic market, there is a need for a large amount of raw materials, and India contributes approximately 5-6% of the global share of raw materials. Among those raw materials and minerals, mica is one that adds to its aesthetics. India holds the monopoly by supplying around 60% of mica in the global market, primarily from states like Andhra Pradesh, Rajasthan, Odisha, and Jharkhand. This mineral is ground into very fine powders, and its layered silicate structure helps to create the shimmer in eye shadow and other cosmetics.

However, there is a difficult situation in Jharkhand, where more than 300,000 workers and children are digging for dhibra (mica scrap) for private contractors who do not care about their health and safety. The workers are breathing in this dust and getting severe lung diseases like pneumoconiosis, which is absolutely untreatable. While the state "Dhibra Policies" drown in corruption, workers demanding basic survival face penalties from their syndicates.
