Today, 19-year-old Basant Kumar Meghwal of Rajasthan made history in Eugene, Oregon, by becoming the first-ever Indian to win a medal in the high jump category of the World Athletics U20 Championships. By achieving a personal best of 2.21 meters, Meghwal clinched the silver medal in a thrilling competition where the top three athletes tied at the same height, and the ranks were determined by count-back.
Meghwal is being trained by former national record holder Sahana Kumari, and he has improved his previous personal best by a whopping 10 cm this year. His performance, accompanied by the bronze medal in the long jump of Shahnavaz Khan (7.84m), made it the greatest day of India in the history of World Athletics U20 Championships, with the country winning three medals in total.
