Alexithymia, or emotional blindness, is a neurological disconnection, or a restriction of a person’s spiritual development. This condition is common in 10% of the population, but there is a much more significant number of people with a history of trauma, who are unable to feel their own emotions due to the nervous system’s reaction to prolonged distress.

The problem is that the disconnection from one’s body is detrimental to the ability to engage in shadow work, as the information about the emotions is unavailable to the conscious mind. Fortunately, there are a number of interventions, which can help overcome this hiccup in a person’s emotional development. Specifically, certain mindfulness practices allow a person to become aware of the emotions that they feel in their body within eight to nine weeks of regular practice, enabling them to achieve spiritual freedom.
