Call for Probe into Bhubaneswar Buddha Temple Irregularities
Dr. Jnanendra pointed out that over the past 23 years, the temple’s sacred land and resources have been misappropriated and misused.
In a heartfelt appeal rooted in reverence for the teachings of Lord Buddha and concern for the sanctity of the Buddha Temple, senior life member of MBS India and the Bhubaneswar Buddha Temple, Dr. Aryakumar Jnanendra, has called for a high-level investigation into serious allegations of commercialization and financial irregularities within the temple premises.
Addressing a press conference at Hotel Ostra in Bhubaneswar, Dr. Jnanendra expressed deep concern over the transformation of the revered Buddha Temple into a commercial hub, deviating from its original mission of propagating the teachings of Buddhism. He highlighted that, since its inception, the temple was intended as a spiritual center, established with a noble purpose by the Odisha government in 1956 during the global celebration of Buddha Jayanti.
However, Dr. Jnanendra pointed out that over the past 23 years, the temple’s sacred land and resources have been misappropriated and misused. Allegations include the encroachment of land by vested interests, the conversion of the temple into a nexus for commercial activities such as nursery services, catering, scrap sales, hall rentals, and eateries, all operating at the expense of spiritual propagation.
He further revealed troubling financial irregularities, including unpaid property taxes, disproportionate electricity bills, and questionable loans and expenses. Notably, he questioned the justification behind the installation of solar panels worth Rs. 60 lakh in the temple premises, which he claims was unnecessary.
Dr. Jnanendra emphasized that attempts to seek transparency through audits have faced obstacles, and he suspects a conspiracy aimed at sidelining those committed to preserving the temple’s true purpose. He expressed his hope that the authorities, including the Chief Minister of Odisha and the relevant ministers, would take urgent action to restore the temple’s sanctity and ensure that its resources are used solely for the propagation of Buddha’s teachings.
He concluded his appeal with love and reverence for the Buddha’s wisdom, urging all stakeholders to work together in safeguarding the spiritual heritage of Odisha and ensuring that the temple remains a beacon of peace and enlightenment.
